Images of Kahui, HI

Here are a couple of images that I took this week. I spotted a flower on a bananna tree. Did you know that roosters and chickens rule on this small island? So much so, that their are t-shirts with their image. The roosters seems to have no sense of time - since they cackadoodledo through out the day. Included is a shot of the Spouting horn - a blow hole on the Southern part of the island and hot pink hibiscus. From our condo their was a protected nesting area for birds and from our lanai we could see spouting whales. More whales had been seen on this coast in record numbers.

Hawai'i - Farmer's Market, Fruit & Fun

Hello from the road. I've got my Hawaiian groove going with the happy, relaxed attitude Listening to Island music definately puts me in a great mood. So does snorkeling, eating good food, tootleing around and exploring by land and sea.
I checked out the local fruit from local stands, grocery stores and the farmers market. The pineapple was sweet, juicy and delicous and the papaya is a scoopable, melt-in-your-mouth kind of treat. I also tried guava that look like miniture versions of oranges but much smaller and oval. Sour. Not my favorite but I am glad I tried. Then I bought some red spikey fruit that I found out were lychees. My family debated whether the seed in the middle is edible. I tried it and liked it - especially the delicate transparent-like flesh inside. I tried star fruit which are a nice change and have 2 chimoyas which hopefully will ripen before departuring this Friday.

In the other direction (aka. non-healthy), I've tried Kalua pork, Puka Hot Dogs, bananna macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup and a chocolate volcano cake from Roys which is rich, warm and very chocolatey.

Paul Blieden's Photography

A friend of mine took these photos on Sunday and emailed them to. They are so pretty that I wanted to pass them on through my blog. They were taken on Windy Way Trail which is on highway one 5.5 miles north of Malibu and about 2.1 miles from start of trail is Escondido Falls.

Paul and I met a few years back when he was exhibiting his work in Malaga Cove Plaza. There was a picture of a tomato thinly sliced that he layed on glass and shot upwards which was just exquisite. You just never know what friendship is around the corner....

You can check out more of Paul's photography on his website at http://www.paulblieden.com/

Happy Valentine's Day

It's a day of love, indulgences and sweetness.

What I find interesting is the different reactions when you go through your day and bestow Valentines wishes. For example, when I asked my doctor how his Valentines Day was going, he smiled and then scoffed, remarking it is purely capitalisitic - created only to make money. He softened a bit and asked why we cound't just show love for each other every day. He then volunteered that he presents his wife with flowers each Saturday. I think that's wonderful.

We should show our appreciation for each other. And often. I like Valentines Day (even in my currently single state) with all the card-sending, gift-giving opportunities. I like wearing red or pink, sending funny ecards and making special treats. I'm a proponent that every day should be a celebration, but do we make the time or effort to do that every day? I admit, I enjoy receiving too! I like being suprised when a package arrives on my doorstep from a friend and hand-made notes and cards are sent to me from nephews and my niece. I love the sentimental card my Mom sends.

I have a lot of favorite quotes, poems and verses. Today's celebration of love calls for classic..... 1Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful, or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

I hope everyone reading this had a good day today, were nice to strangers, kind to themselves and thoughtful to those that make a difference in their life.

Schooner or Later Diner - A Marina View in Long Beach

My chef-friend is a fan of the Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and has tried several of the recommendations in Southern California. Up for trying something new, we met at Schooner or Later in Long Beach. What's unique about this place? It's a diner that is a stone's throw away from a marina. Literally. It was a sunny, warm morning and my friend scored one of the best tables on the outside patio. We decided on "The Mess" which is basically an omelette with everything in it but the kitchen sink. It was good - I wouldn't give the meal rave reviews but altogether it was a very pleasant experience.http://www.schoonerorlater.com/

Rancho Bernardo Inn - Hidden Gem

Who knew? I have to say this property tucked away from the San Diego coastline is a gem and has holds it's own in today's competitive luxury resort property. Just as you think you are lost in a residential area, the signage appears for this safe haven. What impresses me the most, in addition to the $25 million dollar stellar remodel is the staff and their genuine hospitality and graciousness. From first impressions with valet, bell captain and check-in services to restaurant and spa services, the staff is truely top-notch and first class without a doubt.
